THEBERTON STREET
– ISLINGTON, LONDON
Type: Refurbishment restoration Grade11 listed terrace house
Client : Private
Contractor : Westbourne Projects Limited
Contract Type : JCT Intermediate
Project Value CPI : £ 800,000.00
The
1830 property is situated in the southern part of Barnsbury Conservation Area
and is Grade 11 listed. This project involved a major restoration of the
structural fabric of this building and
listed details, together with the excavation of the rear spaces to enable special
requirements for accessibility. Involving the formation of a double height glazed
rear extension to contain a platform lift and conservatory, providing
wheelchair access between the basement and ground floor, with an external
ramp to give wheelchair access from ground floor level to the rear garden.
The Client had special requirements with regard to accessibility and needed us to work upon
designs, making a listed planning application that could demonstrate that the
proposals for a lift would not be of detriment to the listed building and
conservation area status. We were able to evolve a light weight glazed rear
structure and bridge link to the garden, following consultations with the local
authority listed design officer. The proposed design was deemed as an
enhancement to the rear of the building. The restoration provided the opportunity
not only to make the building liveable but also to restore the internal and
external fabric, contributing to neighbourhood terrace streetscape when seen along
Theberton Street and from Gibson Square.
